Wolves girls hold on to beat Eagles

The Algoma Wolves girls' basketball team was able to withstand a strong rally to still clip the Southern Door Eagles 53-48 Monday night.

Algoma survived a furious second-half rally to beat Southern Door at Fulwiler Fieldhouse Monday night, 53-48. With a strong inside game from Emily Kirchman early and points from six other team members in the first half, the Wolves jumped to a 31-15 lead. Southern Door heated up after the break, with freshman Kendra Shimon scoring inside and out. She had 18 points in the second half, including the bulk of the points in a 20-4 run to give the Eagles their first lead, 35-34 with 11:06 left. The game was tied twice after, the last time at 46-46 with 2:51 remaining. Ella Madden knocked down a three-pointer to give Algoma the lead for good with 2:15 left. SD's Shimon and Algoma sophomore guard Rylee Zimmerman each had a game-high 23 points. Kirchman added 8, Madden 7, Halle Panger and Amelia Robinson each 5, Rylee Fenendael 3 and Julia Vandervest 2 for the Wolves. Zimmerman had 3 3s and Madden, Fenendael and Robinson each one. Sophomore Bella Price scored 11 for the Eagles. Kendra Shimon had two threes, Payton Gilbertson one and Alaina Shimon one. SD was 8-of-17 from the FT line; Algoma, 7-for-22.
