Algoma holds off Gibraltar in conference football opener

It was a tale of two halves that saw Algoma escape Fish Creek with a 50-42 win over Gibraltar Friday night in the MONLPC-East opener.

The decisive quarter proved to be the second for the Wolves, which outscored the Wolves 22-6 to go into halftime with a 36-12 lead.  They would need every one of those points as the Vikings would shutout out the Wolves in the third quarter before going on a 24-14 run in the fourth.

Carter Zimmerman continued to make his case for conference player of the year with six total touchdowns on the game. He found Kaden Vardon for all three of his passing touchdowns and rushed for three of his own. Zimmerman put up 364 offensive yards, including 269 yards on 40 carries.

Sam Lindenberg did his best to match Zimmermann, throwing for 184 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 148 yards and two scores. Braden Sitte led all receivers with 114 yards receiving on four catches for two touchdowns.

The Wolves look to stay perfect in conference play when they host NEW Lutheran/Oneida Nation. The Vikings will look to break their three-game slide at Gillett. Both games will kickoff at 7 p.m.
