Algoma football looks to keep momentum rolling against Gibraltar

Looking at how the regular season has gone, it is hard to believe the Algoma football team ever took a year off.

COVID is to blame for the Wolves never taking to the gridiron for a game last school year with the virus' uncertainty forcing the team to do only intrasquad work in the fall and numbers impacting any attempt at playing in the spring. Algoma head coach Wade Vandervest says they tried to take advantage of the time to install some new things and to get a young team stronger.

Carter Zimmerman has been key to the Wolves' 2-1 start, especially in last week's 26-6 win over Suring where he threw for 147 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 120 yards and two scores. Vandervest says there are plenty of other players contributing as well.

The Vikings fell to Laona-Wabeno last Saturday 38-22. Sam Lindenberg and Giuseppe Mercier scored rushing touchdowns and Braden Sitte registered one through the air to put points up for the Vikings.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Broadcast coverage of Gibraltar football on 105.1 The GOAT will return next week when the Vikings travel to Gillett.
