Algoma High School

DKHS.com's Champion of Champions Series: 1983 Algoma Baseball

Algoma's girls sports teams have carried the torch in recent years, but in 1983 its was the boys' baseball team that gave the school its state championship.

The Wolves beat Waunakee and then Big Foot to claim its first and only state championship not just for baseball but for boys in general. A little luck went a long way to help the Wolves get into the championship game when they battled Waunakee. Pitchers and defense got themselves out of jams, forcing Waunakee to leave 13 people on base. The Wolves were also able to take advantage of three errors by Waunakee's Tim Price, which is in WIAA record books for second-most errors by one player in a game. Algoma's John Jones is also in the record books, recording two of his three sacrifices in the tournament against Waunakee to help the Wolves face Big Foot in the championship game.

The Wolves won their title game against Big Foot 9-3 thanks in part to their work on the base paths. They hit two triples and stole six bases in the game that clinched the title for Gerald Guth's team in Division B.
