Algoma High School

Algoma girls basketball drops season opener

The Algoma High School girls basketball team lost their season opener at Wausaukee 40-29 on Friday night. It is an adage that is normally reserved for football about the defense being ahead of the offense early in the season but that played out in spades on the court Friday. Because of the 90-minute commute, the game began at 6 PM and there was no JV contest. Perhaps the deviations from what would be considered a normal schedule affected the offensive production for both teams.

Algoma scored fewer than 29 points just once all of last season. Wausaukee's 40 points would have been tied for their third lowest total last season. The lack of offense was atypical for both squads. Practices began last Monday with Thanksgiving forcing a condensed schedule before the first game. Algoma does not take the court again until Saturday, November 30th.
