Algoma football suffers first eight-man loss

Algoma Head Coach Wade Vandervest said earlier in the week that Newman Catholic would be the Wolves' biggest eight-man test to date. On Friday night, Algoma fell short in answering that challenge. The Fighting Cardinals picked up a 42-12 victory on the road. Quarterback Ben Bates ran for two scores and threw for another as Newman Catholic jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead. Algoma tried to fire back in the third, scoring twice. QB Carter Zimmerman had a one-yard touchdown run before finding Chase Peronto for 50 yards. Both touchdown drives had unsuccessful two-point attempts. After three, it was 28-12. Algoma's defense couldn't slam the door shut for the entire second half though. Newman Catholic scored two more times in the fourth to round out the scoring.

Algoma was missing running back Oliver Robertson who was hurt on special teams in Week Two at Sevastopol with the game well in hand in the second half. Algoma travels to Gillett on Friday.
